How did Eastern Europe become Soviet-controlled after WWII?

Did Stalin simply station Soviet troops in Eastern European countries under the premise that they were "liberating" those countries from Nazi control, and the troops stayed there? Or did he have his troops invade those countries after WWII? Or what?
